Mental Health Awareness Week

13th May 2018

Did you know that this week was mental health awareness week?  This year the mental Health Foundation have decided to focus on stress.Exercise is one of the most effective ways to improve your mental health. Most people will experience stress at some point in their life, but constant or extreme stress is bad for both the mind and body.

Stress can be caused by a sudden traumatic event or even just the expectations of daily life. A healthy lifestyle can help minimize and manage your stress levels. Regular exercise can increase self-confidence, it can relax you, and it can lower the symptoms associated with mild depression and anxiety. Exercise can also improve your sleep, which is often disrupted by stress, depression and anxiety.

The Mental Health Foundation believe ‘We need to change the way we view physical activity in the UK in order not to see it as something we ‘have to do’, ‘should do’ or ‘ought to do’ for our health, but as something that we do because we personally value its positive benefits to our wellbeing. There is a fantastic article about how to look after your mental health using exercise on the Mental Health Foundation website.

At the Y Club we offer our members a way of life, with fully qualified staff offering encouragement and support alongside challenging and fun exercise programs suitable for all levels of fitness. You can choose from over 90 of Manchester’s most innovative exercise classes each week including Strength & Conditioning, CoreWork, Yoga, BodyShred, badminton and much more. To help you fit these into your busy schedule, classes are timed to last from 30 minutes up to 90 minutes and are spread throughout the day.

Group exercise is fantastic for improving your mental well being as classes are a fun, effective and social way to get fit and release those endorphins and serotonin (happy hormones) which improve our moods and energy levels.

The most important thing it to find an activity you enjoy — whether it’s an active badminton game, yoga class or gym workout — and make it part of your regular routine. Any form of physical activity can help you unwind and become an important part of your approach to easing stress and improving your general mental well being.
