About Us

Manchester YMCA was established in 1845 and is the second oldest YMCA in the world after London. We’ve been helping to keep people healthy and strengthening communities ever since. Originally, Manchester YMCA was based on Peter Street – next to the Midland Hotel – but moved to our purpose built Castlefield home in 1990.

We’re a charity (250658) with the objective of making people happier and healthier. Whether you join the Y Club, stay at the Castlefield Hotel or just come in for a drink or bite to eat, you’re helping to support the work we do with local people. Want to know more about our activities (Click here).

We hope that makes us different. We do really want to support people to become healthier. We also want people to feel part of something and provide a way for you to meet and make new friends.

Environmental sustainability

We’re committed to reducing the carbon emissions from running the Hotel and Y Club and reducing the amount of waste, particularly that which goes to incinerator or landfill. Recent steps taken include:

  • Installation of solar panels which meet 23% of our electricity consumption
  • New waste bins in the Y Club to separate waste at source
  • Hotel bathrooms are now on sensored lighting and bedroom electrics are key card activated
  • Change to using more local suppliers
  • Buying in bulk to reduce the number of deliveries per week

How to get here

We’re easily accessible with public or private transport and if you’re coming under your own steam:

Walking: just a short walk from Manchester City Centre. 15 minutes from St Peter’s Square according to Google.

Cycling: if you’re looking to get round the city once you are here then the bike is a great way to get about. There’s a Starling Bank Bike store just one minute up the road with bike and e-bike options.

Tram: the nearest stop is Deansgate which is just a 5 minute walk away. The Deansgate station has direct trams to Old Trafford (football and cricket), Trafford Centre, The Lowry, Exchange square, Victoria Station and many more.

Bus: Liverpool road is on the free bus route around Manchester City Centre so if you’re looking to get to or from Manchester Piccadilly or the Central Coach Station it couldn’t be easier.

Train: if you’re arriving at Manchester Piccadilly, you can get the free bus or the tram to get to us. You’ll need to change at St Peter’s Square if you get the tram. If you arrive at Victoria Station, then the tram is the best option as it’s direct to Deansgate.

Unity Through Wellness

Happier and Healthier – our aim is to ensure that everyone who steps through the Y Club door leaves happier and healthier after their session. We want to provide you with what you need to live a healthy life, recognising that both physical health and mental health are closely connected.

More connected – we have a great community at the Y Club and are a permanent fixture of the beautiful and historic Castlefield area. Coming to the Y Club makes you part of that community, providing a space to meet up with neighbours, old friends and new friends.
