Getting back into your 2020 fitness game
2020 is your year. You promised to prioritise your health in every sense of the word. But you’ve been out of the game for a while, where on earth do you start?
NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) I get it, I’ve already lost you. Broadly speaking NEAT is our daily movement we do outside of the gym. We can’t expect to sit at a desk all day, smash a one hour workout 3 times a week AND see results. We need to be doing everything we possibly can to raise our activity levels. Take the stairs instead of the lift, go to the supermarket instead of doing your weekly online shop, walk to work/the gym/the shops or park further away. By doing this, you’re daily step count will increase and you’re guaranteed to see changes much faster.
- We all know how important it is to stay hydrated. There are many different opinions on exactly how much water we should be drinking but no one can tell you exactly how much water you need. Everyone will be slightly different. I would always recommend having a bottle of water handy throughout the day, drink when you’re thirsty and top up when it’s gone. Make sure you drink more in high heart and during/after exercise.
- Get your Z’s in, I can’t stress this enough. I know a lot of people struggle with this but try to maintain a daily schedule the best you can, reduce caffeine intake throughout the day and turn off all devices an hour before sleeping. Sleep increases concentration, creativity, social skills and health and decreases stress, anger, irritation and mood swings.
Stop restricting yourself when it comes to your diet. In fact, eliminate the word DIET all together. We first need to ditch the mindset that got us here in the first place. We go through this follow/unfollow/diet starts Monday on a weekly basis because the truth is, “diets” don’t work. No more deprivation, no more starvation and no more binging. Fill yourself with wholesome foods that will fuel your body ready to live its best life, whilst enjoying your favourite foods. This way you are less likely to feel hard done by and fall off the band wagon.
Step out of your comfort zone – nothing grows there. To 90% of us, the gym is an intimidating place filled with people who seem to know exactly what they’re doing. I promise you that’s not the case. They’re not going to stare or judge you through your entire workout either. If this still isn’t enough to persuade you, bring a friend along, join a class you’ve always fancied, copy a workout from your phone, or invest in a personal trainer to gain knowledge and boost your confidence.
Exercise needs to be rebranded as a means to enhance daily life and wellness, not to lose weight. Live less out of habit and more from intent. Practice all of the above will give you natural positive change without the limitations. Let’s make 2020 the year you follow through on those resolutions.
